Costumes for Twins

Whether it's Halloween, Purim, or just a rainy afternoon, costumes are fun for the whole crew. Many of the suggestions below include tips on making the costumes. But there's nothing wrong with store-bought costumes, either. My girls are still playing with costumes we bought 4 years ago, so I consider that money well spent. And we have enough costumes lying around to supply an extra set of twins. Or two....

Twin/multiple themes

• My two girls were salt and pepper shakers for Halloween. They were quite adorable (felt jumpers, silver hats w/ dots) but the hats made [one girl] cry. My lesson for next year: let them get used to the costumes before Halloween!
  
  
• I saw some neat costumes for multiples in the parade. Three little girls were dressed as the three little pigs. They all wore pig costumes and each one carried either toy bricks, a satchel of straw or a bundle of twigs. It was very cute. Two other kids dressed a Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. Just some ideas for next year!
  
  
• My 18-month-olds had matching "102 Dalmation" outfits and were soooo cute. The funniest part was DH pulled them around from house to house in a wagon and they just sat in the wagon laughing at each other. I guess they thought each other looked funny in costume and did not realize they looked the same way.
  
  
• 15 month old b/g twins were Jack and Jill. Just wore sweat pants and top that could easily be dirtied and torn. Wrapped up Jack's head with toilet paper and gave them a bucket with a label reading "Property of Jack and Jill. Water only."

Family themes

• My 5 year old daughter went as a butterfly, and the boys [3yo] went as caterpillars that haven't changed into butterflies yet. They were so cute, that every house DH took them to, people made them wait while they got family members to the door to see them. ...
  
  ... all three costumes were bought [at Costco], and they were only $15 a piece. They were plush material, and very nice. It was 35 degrees at night, and they were so warm, that they didn't need to wear a coat or mittens!
  
  
• My 8 mo. id boys were dressed as a lion and a tiger (plush purchased costumes). All Halloween night I was thinking I should have planned ahead and got a safari hat, a khaki shirt and a whip for myself and gone as a lion tamer from the circus as I pushed my not overly thrilled kitties in the stroller.
  
  
• Thing 1 and Thing 2. Super easy to make the outfits, but the blue hair was a bit tricky. I couldn't find wigs anywhere, so ended up getting a Marge SImpson beehive wig and cutting it. Then we glued it onto two baby caps - voila!
  
  I would like to have said that Big Sister (5) dressed as the Cat in the Hat, but alas, she was a Barbie.
  
  
• My oldest daughter was Pooh Bear and so the twins were the Hunny Pot and the Bumble Bee from Pooh. They were costumes from the Disney store and were so cute.
  
  
• My ID girls (2.5 years) were flowers and I dressed as a gardener (straw hat, overalls, watering can). I drew ladybugs on their cheeks with eye and lip liner and out of cardboard I drew and painted flowers and a flower box and attached it to their wagon and pulled them in a parade in our town. We only got half a block though before they got upset by the crowd towering over them so we just pulled over and watched the rest of the parade. We had lots of fun!
  
  
• We went as a feeding frenzy. [The twins] dressed as sharks and me, my DH and best friend went as a kelp bed with dead, bloody fish sewn on to our seaweed! It was a big hit!
  
  
• The old woman who lives in a shoe. Mom dresses up like an old woman. Decorate stroller like a shoe and fasten dolls to it. Kids dress up like rag-a-muffin kids.
  
  
• We've done several years of related costumes. Even won a contest or two at church. <grin>
  
  Before our twins were walking: They were M&M's in the double stroller and DW and I were M&M bags. The boys had small round M&M pillows pinned to the front of their coats. They still like to play with those.
  
  After they were walking (in order):
  
  [Our daughter] was Little Bo Peep and the boys were sheep. (BTW if you need to know how to bend PVC pipe for the crook just ask...) The sheep costumes were fleece tunics that pulled over. (DW made 'em) One boy had black sweats and the other had gray.
  
  Wizard of Oz: [Our daughter] was Dorothy (with a stuffed dog for Toto), [one boy] was the Lion, [the other] was a scarecrow, I was the tin man and DW was the wicked witch. (I think she enjoyed that role a little too much....)
  
  
• Decorate wagon to be a pumpkin patch, complete with sign that says "Welcome Great Pumpkin". Snoopy will ride in the wagon and we'll play a tape recording of the Peanuts music to identify them as the Peanuts Halloween characters. Kids dress up as ghosts in sheets. One child will have to be Linus though with a blue blanket.

Pregnant Twin Mom

• A family friend who was pregnant and her DH came to a party as garbage bags. Used the extra large black ones cut leg holes and scrunched up the top around their necks. Front of the women's bag said "I'm HEFTY", DH's read "I'm GLAD".
  
  
• You could also go as a Hershy Kiss, LOTS of aluminum foil or silver lame.

NTR (Not Twin Related)

• The babies were birds. I got inexpensive sweat shirts from Wal-Mart and sewed on feathers (got through one and a half costumes before I realized that a glue gun was superior to a needle and thread ). One was a bright pink bird with traces of turquoise and purple and the other was bright blue with yellow, red, and green. I couldn't find orange tights anywhere so I had to dye them.
  
  What I didn't plan on properly was that feathers around their faces were going to drive them nutty so they were willing to wear the costumes for exactly 10 minutes before throwing a total tizzy.
  
  
• The chicklets were fairy princesses.
  
  We made the skirts and shawls out of my mom's kitchen curtains and wore sweatpants underneath. Crowns were purchased last year on clearance, 25 cents each. Ribbon sewn on the waist to tie them on. Bought two turtlenecks at Goodwill ($1 and $2 each) and sewed rickrack (.20 a yard, only needed 18 inches of each color)around the wrists and neck. Costume jewelry courtesy of Grandma. Made fairy wands out of dowel rods, Crayola model magic, and "jewels" from the craft store. Total cost, $9.67 for BOTH costumes! [Thank goodness for FamilyFun magazine!]
  
  
• [My girls (12)] are being pirates (we bought old black pants and red/white striped T-shirts at a second hand store)
  
  
• 2 month old brother was Little Boy Blue. Dressed in blue outfit, placed a little plastic horn by him in his stroller and got some "hay" stuff from a craft store and tied it to his stroller so it looked like he was under a haystack. And, he slept too.
  
  
• Race car drivers - DW made matching blue jumpsuits one with an orange stripe and one with red. They had blue hot wheels hats on too.
